This plays out in thousands of Saudi households every week. What is strange is that nobody says the most important question out loud: who is this person, actually?

The problem is not the tutors

Let us start from an important point. The overwhelming majority of private tutors are serious people who deliver real value and deserve fair pay for it.

The problem is the market itself, not the individuals in it.

There are hundreds of thousands of unverified private tutors in the Kingdom. No register brings them together, no standard measures them, and no authority to turn to if something goes wrong. The excellent tutor and the weak one look identical from the outside: a mobile number, a message in a group, and a verbal promise.

That fog hurts both sides. Parents pay without feeling settled, and the capable tutor has no way to prove that he is capable.

Three questions every parent is really asking

When we sat down and listened to families, the same questions came back almost every time. There were three of them.

What happened in the lesson? The child leaves the room, says it was fine, and that is where it ends.

We decided to build Mualimi around those three questions specifically. Not around what we assumed parents needed, but around what they actually told us.

Question one: who is this person?

Every tutor on Mualimi verifies their identity through Nafath, the Kingdom's national digital identity gateway. This is not a formality; the identity is matched against official records before the tutor appears in any search result.

The tutor then uploads their degree or certificate, and the profile goes to a human reviewer. Nothing is approved automatically. If the requirements are not met, the tutor receives the reason for the rejection.

Then comes a third layer: every subject a tutor adds is reviewed before it goes live. A tutor cannot advertise a subject that has not been approved.

The idea is simple. You should know who is sitting in front of your child before they sit down, not after.

Question two: is the price fair?

In the traditional market, price is built on negotiation and luck. One parent pays a certain amount; their neighbour pays double for the same subject at the same year level.

On Mualimi, the price is published on the tutor's profile before you book. You see it, you compare, then you decide.

If something adds to the cost, such as a long travel distance, it appears clearly before you confirm rather than afterwards. No surprises at the end of the month.

Question three: what happened in the lesson?

This was the biggest gap of all.

After every session, the system generates a summary of what was covered, along with a report for the parent covering how appropriate the content and language were, and how engaged the student was. The report can be downloaded and saved.

We add a short quiz that measures what the student actually understood, rather than what they thought they understood.

None of this was available to parents before. The only option was to ask how the lesson went, and to accept the answer.

Safety is not a feature

We treat safety as the foundation of the product, not a line in a list of features.

In-app payment. No cash, no transfers outside the system. If a lesson is cancelled by either side, its value returns to your wallet automatically.

Tutor arrival tracking. You can follow the tutor's location before an in-person lesson begins, so you know when they will arrive instead of waiting without information.

In-app communication. Messages and calls run through Mualimi, with no personal numbers exchanged between parents and tutors.

The lesson location is yours to choose. Home is not the only option. A lesson can take place at the tutor's location, or in a public place such as a library or a quiet cafe. Many families prefer that, and it was never available in an organised way before.

What we are actually trying to change

Private tutoring in the Kingdom is a large market running on old tools: WhatsApp groups, scattered adverts, cash in hand, and trust built on word of mouth.

We are not trying to replace the private tutor. We are trying to give them a framework to work within, and to give families what they deserve: clarity.
